Spach House
The purpose of this geophysical survey was to attempt to image the footprints of cultural features at the Adam Spach Rock House (Site 31DV218). The Site is located on the north side of the Miller Creek stream valley in the Friedberg community of Wintson-Salem.
The geophysical survey found possible evidence of four structures. The two sets of reflections in anomaly A-3 represent the footprint of the former smokehouse and another possible structure or activity area. Anomaly A-10 appears to outline the footprint of structures associated with the former barn. Anomaly A-17 could represent the footprint of an early cabin used on the property while the rock house was constructed.
Anomalies A-1 and A-2 through A-8 are located near the rock house foundation and are likely related to domestic activities at the former homestead. Anomalies A-9 and A-11 could be cultural features related to activities around the former barn.
Three driveways or old roadbeds were identified by the survey. Anomalies A-13 and A-15 represent the road leading to the north from the rock house foundation. Anomaly 16 is a possible driveway or roadbed leading toward the terrace of Miller Creek. This roadbed is located adjacent to the possible cabin footprint. The northern set of reflections of anomaly A-20 is interpreted as the former driveway between Spach’s Road and the rock house.
The source of anomalies A-12 and A-14 is not known, but these are located near former roadbeds. Anomaly A-18 is likely a 20th century utility line. Anomalies A-19, A-21 and A-22 are located in the northeast corner of the parcel and are not likely associated with the Spach House. It is possible that they are related to soil disturbance along the property boundary with the townhouse development to the north.
