Old Councill Memorial Cemetery, Boone, NC
Assisted the Junaluska Heritage Association in locating and mapping 160 mostly unmarked burials in the African American section of the cemetery. Unmarked burials were located using GPR and electrical resistivity surveys.
A total of 164 potential unmarked graves were located in the cemetery. Headstones for four marked burials are also mapped in the African American section of the cemetery. The GPR survey worked well and was used to locate the potential unmarked burials in the cemetery.
The GPR and ER systems identified unmarked graves primarily by the disturbed soil in the grave shaft.
